Famous people

It is hard to mention all the famous people who came from Zamość or have visited the town. Among them were crowned heads including a few Polish kings, Austrian Emperor Joseph the Second and Tsar Nicholas the First. Apart from Jan Zamoyski, the founder of the town and the first Entailer, also a few other Entailers became famous all over Poland, including the founder’s grandson Jan Sobiepan Zamoyski, whose brave defence of Zamość fortress against the Swedes was described by Sienkiewicz in his famous novel “Potop” and Andrzej Zamoyski, Chancellor and one of the pillars of Polish Enlightenment. Another name, which needs to be mentioned, is that of Maria Zamoyska, Jan Sobiepan’s wife, who after her husband’s death failed to obey the full term of mourning and married Hetman Jan Sobieski and is commonly known as Queen Marysieńka Sobieska. Many writers are also associated with Zamość, including Jan Kochanowski, Szymon Szymonowic, Sebastian Klonowic, Stanisław Staszic, Kajetan Koźmian, Stanisław Młodożeniec, Bolesław Leśmian and  Maria Dąbrowska, to name just a few.
