Remains of the watergate were found by accident during earthwork carried out in 1978. The gate and 30 sections of curtain walls on both sides of the postern were reconstructed a few years later.
Originally, the area south of fortress walls was swampy and overflowed with water. In 1836 the swamps were finally dried out to improve the health conditions in the fortress. The watergate made it possible for the troops located in the particular fortification and hydrotechnical facilities in front of the walls to keep in touch.
At present the Watergate closes Moranda Street, which leads to the Rynek; its other end leads to the Rotunda.
